The historic Capitol Theatre opened in 1928 as the first movie house in Rome with the ability to present sound pictures. For several decades, the Capitol entertained Romans of all ages with film but, due to changes in the field of film exhibition, the venue was used only sparingly for live and film events beginning in 1973.
In the mid-1980s, a group of dedicated volunteers managed to incorporate the Capitol Theatre into a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, launching restoration efforts. Since its incorporation, the Capitol has dramatically expanded its programming, with over 100 performances per year gracing its Mainstage. Meanwhile, the organization has acquired several neighboring properties, one of which was developed into Cinema Capitol. This two-screen independent cinema presents an eclectic array of first-run movies 365 days per year.
Having physically expanded, the Capitol recently adopted the name Capitol Arts Complex. With plans to restore its grand theater, further grow programming at both the historic theater and Cinema Capitol, and to open new, versatile event spaces in recently-acquired buildings, the Capitol continues to thrive and to serve as a cornerstone in Rome's blossoming Arts District and Downtown.
